Greatest Headlines of all Time

Here are some of the classic headlines that produced amazing results. Some headlines may sound out of date but the technique and concept still applies today.
  1. They laughed when I sat down at the piano – but when I started to play!
    This one is a classic. It builds a story and connects you emotionally and intrigues you to read the body copy. More importantly we can all relate to a situation like that and we want to be that person playing the piano.
  2. They grinned when the waiter spoke to me in French – but their laughter changed to amazement at my reply.
    This is very similar to number 1. What is great about this is that it builds anticipation, makes you want to read more. There is also good use of imagery to make it clear what you will expect.
  3. Do you make these mistakes in English?
    The genius in the headline is the use of the word “these”, it’s very specific and makes the reader want to read on to see if they are making those mistakes. It also makes it feel like it’s an easy read.
  4. Can You Spot These 10 Decorating Sins?
    The article makes the body content fun and interactive. Seems simple to compare if you made the “decorating sins”.
  5. How a “fool stunt” made me a star salesman
    “How to” headlines are effective for those that want to learn but in this case even if the reader is not in sales he is still curious about the “stunt”. And if the reader is a salesman he would be more than curious, he would want to discover something that would help him.
  6. How a strange accident saved me from baldness
    This again builds curiosity and fear especially men who are concern about going bald. Could this accident happen to you? Better read and learn from the mistake.
  7. Who else wants a screen star figure?
    While we don’t use the term screen star, we all want the screen star figure. What is great about the headline is the part “Who else” which makes it seem as easy as raising our hands.
  8. Who else wants a lighter cake – in half the mixing time?
    This is the same concept as the previous headline but the extra kicker is the “half the mixing time” which is specific. When the title is more specific the more credible it seems. For example, Switching to the new credit saved me $500 vs. Switching to the new credit card saved me $528.14 last year.
  9. Free to brides – $2 to others
    Some argue that the word “Free” don’t work anymore and that it’s overused, I would disagree, no matter how many bad “free” things we get we still want to get the next one for free. What is great is that it puts the brides in a different class and they feel an entitlement and want to discover what they are getting for free.
  10. Free to high school teachers – $6 to others
    Same as the previous example.
  11. Announcing the new Ford cars for (year)
    Announcing makes it sound grand and exciting. This will get more readers because this is news and not just an ad.
  12. Are You Ashamed of Smells In Your Home?
    This title will attract those that says yes. But there will be many more that will ask “Should I be?”. That is the opportunity for the advertiser to sell them on why they should be ashamed.

As you can tell some of the headlines will create an imagery in your mind and there are some where it doesn’t have much impact unless there is the right image complementing it. Here are tips on selecting the right image to match the headline.

    • Have the image as large as possible.
    • Sometimes the imagery is in the design of the text.
    • Tell a story with the image and headline.
    • Make sure the image makes sense with the headline.
    • Show emotion.
    • Have a focus in the image, do not have too many elements.
    • Diagrams may be helpful.
